New Puppy Games And A Healthy Recipe For Homemade Dog Biscuits

Hi. I'm Tao. I'm an 8-week-old German shepherd puppy. I joined the family last week. Normally Cristie would be writing this post, but she's sleeping. The poor woman is exhausted. For days now, we've been walking outside twice in the middle of each night and she's still not used to our new schedule. She should sleep during the day I tell her, but she goes off to work at Wisconsinmade.com and plays on computers. You can follow her on Twitter and Facebook, but she should really be following me. And I'm learning new games all the time. So is Cristie. Cristie's friend and coworker, Vicki, suggested we watch episodes of The Dog Whisperer. These shows are teaching us lots of new ways to play. We watch dogs chew things up, dive incessantly into swimming pools, chase small animals, and bite people when they try to sit on beds. The dogs are having a super time until, every episode, this guy walks in and tells the dogs to sit down. They should really cut him from the show....But I have games of my own. I'm old enough to start practicing my own tricks. Last night I found I could pull on this tiny piece of fringe dangling from the table cloth and get everything on the table, - the TV remotes, the kid toys, the lamp, and the beer glass, - to slide off. Cristie got excited about my new trick; she screamed. She grabbed the lamp before it hit the floor. But she should have grabbed the beer. What a shame to give all that good Wisconsin micro-brew to the carpet.

But then she got to play her favorite game, - patting paper towels on the rug. She plays this a lot. But she won't let me play. She always shoos me away when I grab her paper towel roll. The game makes her grumpy; I don't know why she plays it so often.

The other game Cristie likes to play a lot is walking in circles around the kitchen, splashing soapy water in a big sink, and dumping food into bowls and stirring it. As off the wall as this game appears, I'm recognizing its potential merits. For example, last night after she did these things she produced a plate of very tasty biscuits. And she shared them!!! They smelled so good I had to interrupt my rawhide chewing to eat some. They had a sweet apple flavor. Cristie said they are healthy dog treats. She also said they are a lot cheaper than all those raw-hides. I'm glad she's so pleased with them; that means she'll likely make more.

But I'm rambling; it's something puppies do. Back to the work at hand. As guest food-blog writer I need to give you a recipe. So I'll give you the recipe for these homemade dog biscuits. The recipe comes from the cookbook, Doggie Delights and Kitty Cuisine by Martha Ward. It was co-created by Cinnamon, a golden retriever of discerning palette. It's called An Apple A Day.

An Apple A Day

• 2 cups whole wheat flour
• 1/2 cup unbleached flour
• 1/2 cup cornmeal
• 1 apple, chopped or grated
• 1 egg, beaten
• 1/3 cup cooking oil
• 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
• 2/3 cup water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray cookie sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Lightly dust work surface with flour.

Blend the flours and cornmeal in a large mixing bowl. Add the apple, egg, oil, sugar, and water; mix until well-blended. On floured surface, roll dough to a 1/4-inch thickness. cut with cookie cutter. Place treats on prepared sheet. Bake 35-40 minutes. Turn off oven. Leave door closed 1 hour to "crisp" treats. Remove treats from oven. Store baked treats in an airtight container or plastic bag and place in refrigerator or freezer.

Cookie cutters shaped like a doggie bone or fish are available at most kitchen gadget, craft, or variety stores. Bones and cookies can also be shaped "free form" by hand.
